What is Root Beer?

Every time it was mentioned in an American TV-series I asked myself the question "What is Root Beer?"
Nobody had the answer for me at home.
But yesterday I tasted it for the first time in my life. The Jubilee Farm Manager Brandon was very kind and brought some for Sabine and me. We think it tasted very good but was a tad too sweet.
Now I know it is a juice made out of cane sugar, mixed with water.
